Why DC Outreach?
DC Outreach is a charity of special significance to TSR. Dyskeratosis Congenita Outreach, Inc. is a volunteer-operated foundation serving families affected by a rare disease called Dyskeratosis Congenita (DC). Their mission is to provide information and support services to families affected by DC worldwide, to encourage the medical community’s research in finding causes and effective treatments, and to facilitate improved diagnosis by educating medical providers.
What is DC?
DC is a genetically inherited disorder with multiple symptoms estimated to occur in one out of one million people worldwide. 90% of cases lead to progressive bone marrow failure. DC is exceedingly rare and many doctors are unable to recognize and properly diagnose it.
Josh is an amazing 21 year old. He’s a younger brother to Matt and a great friend to everyone else in TSR. In 2006, his bone marrow started failing. After extensive testing, he was diagnosed with Dyskeratosis Congenita in July of 2007. He started taking different trial medicines to help him produce blood. He was also getting monthly blood transfusions to help keep his blood level counts from falling. The medicine ending up damaging his liver and a bone marrow transplant became a necessity.
In August of 2012, Josh received chemotherapy to completely wipe out his failing bone marrow and started his transplant. Josh was lucky enough to find a near perfect match for him and he spent the next 4 months in the hospital recovering. He’s at home now but still recovering from his transplant. His immune system is next to nothing as his body rebuilds everything like a newborn baby. His blood is even a different type now and his DNA has changed.
Josh has been unable to go out in public or do any physical activity for over a year now. His main source of entertainment is playing video games. It’s one of the main reasons we started doing marathons. We all love video games and it’s something he loves to do during this hard time for him. Your donations will go towards helping other needy families affected by DC. If you would like to learn more about DC Outreach, please Click Here to visit their website.
